Duarte Logo

Duarte, California

Photo History

Browsing through the information racks at the Duarte Chamber of Commerce, I ran across a folder provided by the City of Duarte. The folder was comprised of a delightful set reprints of specially commissioned paintings that are packaged in such a way that four of the six reprints may be used as postcards. The paintings depict early life in the area of Duarte, California and are presented below.

The Joseph Holbrook Oils

Composite Subjects

Researched by noted western scene painter Joseph Holbrook is part of historically accurate scenes reproduced in oils commissioned by the Duarte City Council for exhibit in the Duarte City Hall. Suitable for framing, this reproduction includes the boundaries of the original Asuksa Indian Tribe, a branch of the Shoshone Nation; reference to the now famous DeAnza Expedition; the contour of the Andres Duarte Rancho and how the original cattle brand used by Duarte is today the official Logo for the City of Duarte. Smaller reproductions of some of the other scenes created by Holbrook make beautiful, full-color postcards for your out-of -town relatives and friends.

Duarte's First Residents

The California Ranchos Long before Duarte's citrus groves blossomed on the foothill slopes, the first settler, Andres Duarte, introduced cattle ranching to our lands thus beginning our first commercial enterprise. To preserve the history of these days and customs, the Duarte City Council commissioned noted western scenes painter Joseph Holbrook to recreate the life style of early-day California ranchos. Historically accurate, several of the Holbrook oils are on permanent exhibit in Duarte City Hall, such as this one suitable for framing. Smaller reproductions of some of the other scenes by Holbrook make beautiful, full-color postcards for your out-of-town relatives and friends.
