5th ANNUAL HELENDALE RENDEZVOUS In tradition of mountain men who gathered or "rendezvoused" yearly to trade goods, swap stories and make merry, the Helendale School District will sponsor its 5th annual Helendale Rendezvous on Saturday, September 24. The event will be held at Helendale Elementary School located at 27274 Peach Tree Lane in Silver Lakes and will feature a historical "show and tell" designed to recall and commemorate Helendale's unique history. This year's rendezvous theme, "REMEMBERING THE 30'S AND 40'S", will focus on the early Helendale Community and will feature the dedication -for restoration as a community museum- of the still standing "teacherage" which was used to house many of the school district's teachers in days gone by. "We don't want history of the area to die," says Jim Brown, Principal of Helendale School and Coordinator of the Rendezvous since its inception. Additionally, Brown notes, "The unique historical nature of the Helendale community is something that many of our residents may not be aware of and it is part of the mission of the school district, through the Rendezvous, to share this history with our community." With a subtheme of "ROADWAYS, RAILWAYS, AND RUNWAYS", this year's Rendezvous features field trips to various local points of historical interest including sites along the 1930's vintage Route 66 and the then operative, and newly re-discovered, Lenwood Airfield. Additionally, the original "Mojave (later Helendale) School" will be visited. Local historian, Chard Walker, will address the public on the Railroad activity of the period. Of special interest will be the '94 Rendezvous' focus on the early flight of the area which featured the famous Ford Tri-Motor Airplanes of the 1930's. These early planes were some of the first to be used commercially by the T.A.T (Transcontinental Air Transport) to hopscotch travelers by air and rail to several points East. Their use of early navigational "beacons" will be highlighted and a visit to the location of the old Helendale Beacon which was located on Helendale Hill is planned. A wide variety of 1930's-1940's style food, games, historical information, and area artifacts will be included along with a dress-up contest and coloring contest for children. Entertainment of the era will keep this year's Rendezvous lively for those who wish to learn more about the Helendale that is no longer readily apparent. Community members are encouraged to dress in their favorite 30's- 40's costumes, including Military attire, and to attend this growing community event.
