THIS YEAR'S RENDEZVOUS PROCEEDS will be used to relocate and reconstruct the Original
Helendale Teacherage. The Teacherage was used by the early teachers in the district for
temporary and sometimes long-term housing during inclemant weather or as otherwise needed.
Many of the District's early Teachers came to he school from outside the area and
usually stayed for only a term or two. Small, rural, and isolated schools, such as
Helendale, often needed to offer housing to the usually low-paid teachers in order to make
it financially and practically feasible for them to move to the area to teach.
It would have been unusual for Helendale Teachers to travel by horse and buggy to
either Barstow, Oro Grande, or Victorville on the weekends and to stay in the Teacherage
during the school week. In fact, when the Helendale School was built on Riverview Road in
1950 (currently Riverview Middle School) a teacherage was built. This building is
currently being used for storage.
The Rendezvous Planning Committee has set as its goal to preserve the old Teacherage
and possibly to use it to house the first Helendale Museum.
