Mojave River Earliest Pioneers
POINT OF ROCKS
AND
LOCATION OF THE EARLIEST
MOJAVE RIVER SETTLEMENT

Along this Mojave River traveled some of the earliest pioneers passing between the outer desert areas and the Pacific Ocean: Father Garces ( 1776), Jedediah Smith (1826), Kit Carson (1840's), J.C. Fremont (1844), Mormon Wagon Trains and Caravans of Mule Trains and Army Camels (1850's). Located just north of this area is a prominent point of reference on the Old Mojave Trail - The Point of Rocks - which was used by early travelers as a refuge and way station. Nearby also stood the original Bemis Cabin that was built in the 1870's and housed some of the area's earliest settlers. Eventually, this area became part of the Silver River Ranch which later developed into the Community of Silver Lakes. Placed here on September 26, 1992 by the Helendale School District in cooperation with the Mojave Historical Society, The Silver Lakes Association, and the Community, MARKER 1992. Located on the corner of Vista and Helendale Road.
