Southern California Mojave Desert Mitchell Caverns is the real thing. Some 250 million
years old since it started to form, today it's open to view. Mitchell Caverns is truly an
interesting and unique formation of stalactites and stalagmites created in lime, acidic
water, carbon dioxide and calcite crystals. Mitchell Caverns is a California State Park,
located off I-40 between Barstow and Needles, California, and is reached on a good 17 mile
blacktop road.
Inside the caverns a constant 65 degrees makes it comfortable any time of the year, and
areas open to the public have stairs, railings and special lighting. These limestone caves
offer another first hand look at Mother Nature's beauty and almost unbelievable creations.
The caverns are open the year round, and guided tours are available September 10 through
June 15. Days and hours are Monday through Friday, 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm. Special group
tours can be arranged by writing 3 weeks in advance to Providence Mountain State
Recreation Area. P.O. Box 1, Essex, CA or call 760 389 2281. Vehicles touring the area
should be in good condition and fueled up, as there are no services of any kind within 70
miles (Essex or Ludlow on I-40). The area is well maintained by the state and is located
within the boundaries of the National Preserve between I-15 and I-40, California.
The tours run about one hour and fifteen minutes, and for campers, there are primitive
campsites available for a slight charge. A unique and educational adventure for the entire
family.
